Education in Austria 2027/2028 Academic Year

## Admission Requirements

### Bachelor’s Degree

A valid passport or identification document and proof of language proficiency are also generally required, while additional documents may be requested depending on the selected university and programme.
There is no single minimum GPA requirement applicable to all Bachelor’s programmes in Austria. During the admission process, universities may consider the applicant’s secondary school grades, previous academic background, and the equivalence of their educational qualifications within the Austrian education system.
For English-taught Bachelor’s programmes, an IELTS score of approximately 6.0–6.5 is commonly required, although some programmes may require a higher result. For German-taught programmes, applicants are generally expected to demonstrate German language proficiency at B2–C1 level, depending on the requirements of the selected programme.

### Master’s Degree
For Master’s programmes, applicants are generally required to hold a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification and submit an academic transcript demonstrating their previous academic performance. Depending on the programme, universities may also require a Curriculum Vitae, motivation letter, proof of language proficiency, and additional academic documentation.

### PhD / Doctoral Degree
Admission to PhD and doctoral programmes generally requires a relevant Master’s degree or equivalent qualification, together with an academic transcript and evidence of previous academic performance. Applicants may also be required to submit a research proposal, academic Curriculum Vitae, proof of language proficiency, and other documents specified by the university or doctoral programme.

## Tuition Fees

In Austria, tuition fees at public universities for students from outside the EU/EEA are generally around €726.72 per semester. In addition to tuition fees, students are generally required to pay a mandatory student union (ÖH) contribution each semester, which is currently approximately €25 per semester.

Tuition fees at Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen) and private higher education institutions may differ significantly. The applicable fees depend on the selected institution, study programme, and individual admission conditions, and may be higher than those charged by public universities.

## Student Accommodation

Austria offers a range of public and private student accommodation options. The cost of student housing depends on the city, room type, location, and services included in the accommodation.

More affordable student residence options may cost approximately €300–€500 per month, while accommodation in Vienna and residences offering higher standards or additional facilities may cost approximately €500–€700 or more per month.

Students may have the option of choosing between private and shared rooms. Depending on the residence, the monthly accommodation fee may include utilities, internet access, and other services.

As student accommodation places can be limited, international students are generally advised to apply for accommodation as early as possible after completing the admission process in order to increase their chances of securing suitable housing.

The quota provides students with the opportunity to benefit from admission places allocated within the programme framework and to have their place at the selected university reserved in advance within the established quota.

## Admission Dates and Quotas

Austria does not have a single unified admission deadline applicable to all universities and study programmes. Application deadlines vary depending on the selected university, programme, and level of study.

Within the StudyHome EEP framework, the programme quota is determined and organised by the programme and implemented through the established student support mechanism. The quota provides students with access to designated admission places and coordinated support throughout the application and admission process.

The number of available quota places, eligible study fields, admission requirements, and available programmes may vary from one academic year to another.
